Voltage regulator
The
LM317 is a linear voltage regulator used in DC to AC converter applications.
The overall function of the LM317 is similar to that of the LM78xx series
regulators. Whereas the 78xx series of regulators have fixed output voltages
(5V output), the LM317 can be adjusted to any voltage (within its limits) .They
are designed to supply more than 1.5 A of load current with an output voltage
adjustable over a 1.2 to 37 V range. The nominal output voltage is selected by
means of only a resistive divider, making the device exceptionally easy to use
and eliminating the stocking of many fixed regulators.

Resistors
Resistors are the most commonly used
component in electronics and their purpose is to create specified values of
current and voltage in a circuit. A number of different resistors are available
.Resistors with power dissipation below 5 watt (most commonly used types) are
cylindrical in shape, with a wire protruding from each end for connecting to a
circuit .Practical resistors have a series inductance and a small parallel
capacitance; these specifications can be important in high-frequency
applications. In a low-noise amplifier or pre-amp, the noise characteristics of
a resistor may be an issue. The unwanted inductance, excess noise, and
temperature coefficient are mainly dependent on the technology used in
manufacturing the resistor. They are not normally specified individually for a
particular family of resistors manufactured using a particular technology. A
family of discrete resistors is also characterized according to its form
factor, that is, the size of the device and the
position of its leads (or terminals) which
is relevant in the practical manufacturing of circuits using them.
